College and hardware firm join up for warehouse apprenticeships

YOUNG people are being offered the chance to gain skills and work experience with a West Yorkshire hardware company which has teamed up with a local college.

Avocet Hardware, of Brighouse, has places available for 18 to 24-year-olds as trainee warehouse operatives, which could lead to permanent employment with the firm. Trainees will spend two weeks developing their employability skills at Kirklees College before embarking on their work placement with the firm. On-the-job training will include picking, packing, dispatch, housekeeping, health and safety and how to invoice using a computer system.

At the end of the programme, participants will be interviewed for apprenticeship roles with Avocet Hardware. Two types of role will be available at the end of the placement – apprentice warehouse operative or apprentice production operative, and both will include training in a range of additional technical skills. Participants will also attend Kirklees College’s engineering centre in Huddersfield to study towards the new apprenticeship in warehousing and storage qualification. Kirklees College vice principal Melanie Brooke said: “It is an exciting opportunity for young people to not only learn valuable new skills that will set them aside from other candidates in the job market, but they could also land themselves a permanent role with the company.”
