Asda officially named the UK's cheapest supermarket

Leeds-based supermarket Asda has been named Britain’s cheapest supermarket.

The chain received the accolade from trade magazine Grocer in its annual ‘Grocer Golds’ industry awards.

The retailer picked up the award after recording the most wins in the Grocer magazine’s weekly price comparison survey, which compares the prices of 33 everyday items sold by the major supermarket chains.

This is the 23rd consecutive year that Asda has won the Grocer Gold price award.

Asda’s position as the lowest-priced supermarket was also recognised in a separate survey by consumer watchdog Which?

Which? compared the prices of 178 popular grocery products in May across the Big Four supermarket chains and found that shoppers paid £14.64 less at Asda than its nearest rival Morrisons.

Derek Lawlor, chief merchandising officer at Asda, said: “Everyone at Asda works to ensure we’re giving our customers the best value on a basket of shopping every time they shop with us so we’re all absolutely delighted to once again be recognised as the UK’s lowest-priced supermarket by the Grocer.

“We know that customers are more aware than ever of the cost of their shopping, and I am proud that we’re doing everything we can to keep prices low to help their budgets go further.”

The news comes as Asda confirmed it had donated the equivalent of more than 800,000 meals since March 1 to charities and community groups across the UK supporting people affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
