Sheffield City Council and its strategic development partner, Queensberry, submitted proposals to open Radisson Blu in August, as part of the Heart of the City scheme.

They hope that the development on Pinstone Street will attract new business opportunities into the city, while raising its profile as a visitor destination.

The hotel, which will look out over the Peace Gardens, will be housed behind the facades of Palatine Chambers and City Mews. A second building, containing the majority of the hotel’s 154 bedrooms, will replace Barkers Pool House on Burgess Street.

Retail and food and drink businesses will take up space on the ground level of the development designed by Sheffield-based architects, HLM.

The retention of Pinstone Street’s Victorian facades and the incorporation of complementary materials and colours aim to reflect the city’s strong historic identity.

The plans for Radisson Blu are the latest set of proposals within the Heart of the City scheme to receive planning approval, as the project forges ahead to create a new city centre district.

The scheme will feature a new mix of leisure, retail, office and residential developments.

Coun Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “We believe that the arrival of Radisson Blu...not only demonstrates confidence in our city as a worthwhile investment location, but will be a key factor to attracting more businesses and will complement the ongoing rejuvenation of our city centre.”

Adela Cristea, senior director at Radisson Hotel Group, added: “We’re very excited to be at the forefront of Sheffield’s regeneration project in a fantastic location at the heart of the city, as well as adding this vibrant new property to our selection.”
