Crompton at front of the green revolution

A YORKSHIRE-based firm expects to increase its sales and hire more staff in response to growing demand for ‘green’ electricity.

Crompton Controls, which has its head office in Wakefield, yesterday said it would double its turnover to around £7m over the next year.

Staff numbers are also set to rise from 25 to more than 30.

Crompton Controls has devised a control system – the Combi Range – which should enable solar panels to be installed more quickly.

A company spokesman said yesterday: “While the solar panel cells on roofs create a flow of electricity, the Combi is a range of assembled controls consisting of all the components required to convert this into usable household elec- tricity.

“Currently, the installer has to purchase individual components and piece together this conversion and control system on the roof.”

According to Crompton Controls, the Combi Range saves time and money.

John Bradley, a Crompton Controls spokesman, said: “We are proud of our heritage supplying high quality drives and controls into various industries.

“Applying our expertise to the renewables sector, we identified a real time-saving opportunity for our customers, which we have subsequently used on many recent projects.”

Privately-owned Crompton Controls has made and supplied electric motor control equipment for more than 100 years.

A Crompton Controls spokesman said the renewables sector was expanding, and the company’s success proved that the “great British engineering tradition is still very much alive”.
