Rising majestically from the heart of Yorkshire, the Selby based powerhouse is a colossal icon of regional pride and an economic juggernaut, pumping life into the local economy and nurturing the community.
It powers four million homes, contributes £358 million to the local economy and supports 2,500 jobs, including around 1,000 at Drax itself.
Like its giant cooling towers, Drax stands tall propelling the county onto the global stage as a leader in sustainable energy, showing the world that Yorkshire doesn't just adapt to change but leads it.
Since its launch in 1974, Drax Power Station has been a cornerstone of the region's industrial landscape.
From its origins as a coal-fired behemoth, Drax has undergone a metamorphosis, mirroring the county's storied history of industrial prowess and adaptability. This transformation from coal to biomass, shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, has seen an 99% reduction in CO2e emissions. It epitomises Yorkshire's relentless drive to innovate and thrive.

Drax is already the largest decarbonisation project in Europe and its transition to biomass was more than an energy shift; it was a bold statement of environmental stewardship. Now comes the pursuit of cutting-edge carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, at a scale which is nothing short of revolutionary.
It’s set to become one of the first power stations in the world to convert to bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, or BECCS. BECCS is the only technology that simultaneously removes carbon from the atmosphere and generates renewable energy.
Drax power station is not just part of the future; it is shaping it and positions Yorkshire at the pinnacle of energy innovation, as a beacon of hope in the global fight against climate change.
