Government launches self-employment review

The Government has announced a review of self-employment in the UK.

Julie Deane OBE, founder of The Cambridge Satchell Company, will look at the challenges and opportunities available to those who want to work for themselves.

Ms Deane founded The Cambridge Satchell Company in 2008. It now employs 130 people and sells to 120 countries.

One in seven working people are self-employed, making a total of 4.5 million people, according to ONS figures.

The review will look at how those people can be better supported, for example women building businesses alongside childcare commitments.

Ms Deane said: “The business landscape has changed so much in the last 10 years and in such a way that self-employment is now a viable option for so many more people.”

Prime Minister David Cameron added that the review will “shine a light on self-employment”.
