How Tracsis could help to lead a smart ticketing revolution

A Yorkshire-based transport technology provider is set to play a major role in the development of smart ticketing across the UK railway network.

Leeds-based Tracsis is participating in the Rail Delivery Group’s digital pay-as-you-go trials that are now under way, using its Hopsta platform on the Northern Rail network between Harrogate and Leeds.

In a statement to accompany its full year results, Tracsis said it sees significant opportunity as transport industries seek digital services that improve efficiency, performance, productivity and safety.

It also told investors that parts of the UK rail market remain challenged by funding and procurement timing.

The statement added: “While Tracsis’ products and services are well aligned with the UK government’s strategic plans for the future of UK Rail, the proposed renationalisation of Train Operating Companies (“TOC’s”), alongside the creation of Great British Railways, is driving extended procurement timelines.”

It added: “The group has an installed base generating significant recurring revenues. These have been unaffected by near-term headwinds, with FY25 (full year 2025) renewals secured in line with expectations, including multi-year agreements.”

Smart ticketing activity has also been unaffected and Tap Converter is progressing, the statement said.

Andy Kelly, the group’s CFO, told The Yorkshire Post, that the supply chain generally in UK rail has not seen the level of funding coming through that it had anticipated and "we provide a remote monitoring product that is being impacted by that".

"We think that's temporary...it's a near term headwind. We're also going through a period of nationalisation of the operators and the creation of Great British Railways.

"In terms of the big picture what we're seeing there is just a period of uncertainty in the industry..so we're seeing a bit of an extension of procurement timelines.

"Overall, we see both of these as temporary factors. We're well set to ride it out."

Mr Kelly added: "What Tracsis offers in terms of our digital solutions being a trusted partner in the industry positions us well for Great British Railways when it comes."

"Business has been through a challenging period performance-wise but we're feeling confident about the future.

"Smart ticketing is a really prominent part of the Government's plan for the future. Tracsis will be the back office engine to support pay as you go travel being rolled out right across the UK rail network.

"It's this 'London-style' travel experience across the rest of the UK. We're busy building the platform at the moment; the roll out is controlled by the rail delivery group.

"It puts Tracsis right at the heart of that as the technology provider. It's a great example of the sort of technology we provide."

The group’s board also told investors it expects FY26 (full year 2026) performance to be in line with market expectations.
