Jimi Hendrix in Ilkley: Former hotel which hosted famous gig enjoys new lease of life

A Yorkshire mansion which once staged a concert by Jimi Hendrix is set for a new lease of life.

The building in Ilkley, which hosted Hendrix in 1967, has been transformed into a residential care home, with interiors inspired by Ilkley Moor and a restaurant featuring a stained-glass roof dating back to 1901. The building has served as a hydro, hotel and nursing home.

The building - now known as Verbeia Grange - has opened its doors following a refurbishment costing around £2m, with the home aiming to create around 70 jobs.

A spokesman said: “ The residential care home on Crossbeck Road, part of Holden Grange, occupies the former Troutbeck Hydro. Its transformation marks a new chapter for the historic building, with a focus on creating a close-knit community where residents can build friendships, enjoy everyday life and feel a sense of belonging.

“Its place in Ilkley’s history was recently recognised by Ilkley Civic Society with the unveiling of a blue plaque. “

“We want residents to feel known as individuals, to build friendships and to feel part of a community, with their families welcomed into that community too. “

Jimi Hendrix was a a little-known musician when he took to the stage at the Troutbeck Hotel in March 1967.

Some reports claimed as many as 900 people descended on the venue and a local newspaper later ran a headline that read: ‘Pop Fans Ran Amok in Hotel.’

In the end,Hendrix had barely got started when a local policeman walked on stage concerned about people's health and safety and the gig was brought to a premature end.
