KGAL recruits after dam power deal

HYDRO-MECHANICAL engineering consultancy KGAL has launched a recruitment drive after winning its biggest contract to date, which is expected to take up to seven years to complete.

The £2m turnover business was formed in 1991 and employs just under 40 people in total, including around a dozen at its Wakefield office. It is currently looking for six specialist engineers as well as support staff. This comes after it won a deal with Malaysian firm Whessoe Sdn Bhd for part of a $3.8bn project in South-East Asia.

KGAL started work on the Xayaburi Hydro Electric Power project in Northern Laos last year, but it was temporarily halted due to complaints from neighbouring countries and environmentalists.

Construction resumed late last year after design modifications were made. KGAL is designing the water control gates on the power house, spillway, navigation lock and fishpass. Dave Griffiths, a director at KGAL, said the contract “puts KGAL in the same league as a number of the major multi-national consultants involved in large-scale global hydro construction”.
