Kirkstall Bridge Inn: Pub gets green light to show World Cup in beer garden despite opposition

A pub can host outdoor screenings of England World Cup matches after reaching an agreement with the council.

Noise concerns were raised after Kirkstall Bridge Inn applied to open until 3am and screen the football in its car park.

Leeds City Council agreed to grant permission for the events after the opening hours were reduced.

Drinks can be served outside until 11.20pm on June 17 and 23 and midnight on June 27 for England’s first three matches of the FIFA tournament.

An application for temporary event notices (TENS) was opposed by the council’s Environmental Protection Team. (EPT).

The EPT said the events were “extremely likely to cause noise nuisance to nearby residents from loud music, loud sports noise and noise from loud football fans.

The teams objection letter said: “The premises are in close proximity to residential premises on Leeds and Bradford Road and Broad Lane.”

England’s first two 9pm matches against Croatia and Ghana on will be shown at the events, along with the June 27 Panama fixture from 10pm UK time.

The Bridge Road pub, run by Kirkstall Brewery, already has permission to show sporting events indoors until 2am, with the use of outside areas restricted to 11pm.

Permission was sought to serve alcohol in the private car park while showing the football on an outdoor screen. A maximum of 450 people, including pub staff, would be able to attend.

The three TENs applications were due to be heard by a licensing sub-committee at Leeds Civic Hall on Tuesday (May 26).

Leeds City Council said the hearing was not required after an agreement was reached with the applicant.
