Mountain Warehouse’s record festive trading

MOUNTAIN Warehouse yesterday revealed that it enjoyed a record Christmas, with total sales up by 19 per cent in the six weeks ending January 4.

The company said that this performance was driven by the brand’s ‘bricks and clicks’ strategy, which saw the group open its 200th store in Inverness, just before Christmas. Online sales rose by 36.3 per cent over the festive period.

The company, which specialises in selling outdoor clothing and equipment, was also boosted by Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which combined to create its busiest ever four-day trading period.

Sales jumped 33 per cent in stores on Black Friday, while Cyber Sunday was its biggest day ever online, with sales up 53 per cent year-on-year. The company sold 1.2m items of outdoor gear over the six weeks, including 70,000 ski jackets.

Mountain Warehouse was established with a single store in 1997. It was bought by the founder and chief executive Mark Neale, and his management team, in October 2013, in a deal valuing the business at £85m.

Mr Neale said: “Our outstanding Christmas performance caps another excellent year for the business. I’m hugely pleased with continuing strong performance across all our channels: in our UK stores, online and internationally.”

In Yorkshire, the company has stores in York, Skipton, Northallerton, Beverley, Whitby, Harrogate, Ilkley and Richmond.
