NEW LOOK has appointed retail veteran Paul Mason as non-executive chairman.

The 54-year-old, who lives near Ilkley, will succeed founder Tom Singh, who will continue as a non-executive director.

Debt-laden New Look competes against Primark and Next in a fiercely competitive fashion market.

It is owned by private equity groups Apax and Permira as well as Mr Singh.

Mr Mason’s past roles include CEO of Somerfield, Matalan and Asda and European president and head of global retail at Levi Strauss.

Mr Mason is also chairman of retailer Cath Kidston and the Mayborn Group, owner of the Tommee Tippee baby products brand.

Anders Kristiansen, CEO, said: “Paul’s strong track record speaks for itself and I am delighted to welcome him to New Look.

“Paul joins at an exciting time for the company and I look forward to working with him as we focus on implementing our international strategy and continue to invest in our product, people, websites and stores.”

Last month New Look said first-quarter sales and earnings exceeded expectations after it tapped into key summer fashion trends.

The group, which has net debt of £1.04bn, pulled a planned stock market listing in 2010 amid turbulent financial markets.

Mr Mason said: “The last few years have seen tremendous growth for the brand and I’m looking forward to joining the company and working with Anders and the team.”
