Plan to build 32 flats on town centre car park
A 32 apartment residential development could be built on a town centre car park if new plans are approved.
An application to build on the Wharf Street car park in Shipley has been submitted to Bradford Council by Shipley based Castle Residential Properties.
The application says the plans make good use of an “underutilised” car park, which is a brownfield site, and “add to the vitality of Shipley town centre.”
The 16-space under croft car park is accessed off Wharf Street, which runs parallel to the Leeds Liverpool Canal, and is at the side of Commercial Street, one of Shipley’s busiest roads.

The application says: “The Brief for the site is to provide a residential development of apartments in keeping with its surroundings both in terms of scale and massing.
“The proposed dwellings should provide good quality accommodation and amenity, making best use of the space available.
“The scheme to be designed to avoid issues of overlooking or overbearing, and should be built from materials sympathetic to the area, but not necessarily copying surrounding buildings.
“The proposed scheme should provide adequate car parking provision and access given its sustainable location, and should provide space for refuse bin storage.
“The car parking area will be fitted with Electric Vehicle charging points as required by Building Regulations.
“We are proposing 32 one and two bed apartments with 16 car spaces.
“Although this does not equate to 100 per cent car parking, the Town Centre location and close proximity to railway station and bus services, as well as the provision of cycle storage and the close proximity of Leeds Liverpool Canal, which is ideal for cyclists, we feel that this should be more than adequate.
“The design of the building will infill a prominent gap within the street scape and will provide much needed housing.
“The loss of the car park will have very little effect on the general car parking capacity within the area, as it was underutilized and is slightly separated from the Town Centre area, by Saltaire Road.”
It says the development would “add to the vitality of Shipley Town Centre” and adds: “It will make a significant contribution to meeting local housing need and represent new investment to support the continuing regeneration of Shipley.”
A decision on the application is expected in the New Year.
