For the music lover

If you’re a music fan, you’ll need to head south, into Tennessee. Nashville is the music capital of the country. Although “Nashville” and “music” brings about the idea of exclusively country music, mainly due to the Nashville TV show, that is simply not the case. There is everything to be found from rock, pop, gospel, blues and more. Explore the music walk of fame, enjoy music-themed attractions like Johnny Cash’s Museum, the Musicians Hall of Fame Museum and more, or buy tickets to a gig.

If you time it right you can head over to Austin, Texas for a visit to the SXSW festival, which regularly features the most bleeding edge of entertainment. If you see a band there, you will hear them on the radio next year. But there is also a film festival and conferences to enjoy.

For the party-goer

If your philosophy is a good time, not a long time, you’re going to want to head to the west coast. A road trip from San Francisco, through California stopping in LA on your way to Las Vegas will give you all the stops you need for a good fun time. If that sounds like a lot, don’t worry. You can now gain an ESTA for UK citizens, which will allow you free roam around the Land of the Free for a maximum of 90 days, so you can make a road trip out of it.

San Francisco is known for its LGBT community, who, if nothing else, know how to party. There will be plenty of bars containing drag acts, good music and drinks. Going into the City of Stars you can enjoy the idea of every star trying to make it in Los Angeles. That means you can hear everything from metalheads to jazz players in the underground venues of the city.

And once you head into the desert, you know where you’re going. Just follow the lights to the City of Sin. Do we even need to explain why this is fun? It’s party central, with numerous bars and casinos keeping you on your toes.

For the culture vulture

The problem with planning a trip to the US for the culture vulture is, what culture do you focus on? America is a melting pot of cultures, each with their own identity constantly mixing in different ways. If that’s the element you’re interested in, you should head to New York. You will never find a more buzzing hive of contradicting and proud identities.

Not only do you have iconic landmarks all over the city, from the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building and Times Square, but you’ve also got the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and if anything epitomises a hub of gathered cultures, the Met does.

It isn’t just American artworks displayed in the most iconic art gallery and museum in the world, but famous works from all around the world are displayed in the Met, including Van Gogh’s self-portrait, the Death of Socrates and the works of Caravaggio and Jackson Pollock.
