What are the prospects for the property sector in Yorkshire and Humber?

The prospects at the moment are encouraging as there is a demand for both commercial and residential properties. However, these opportunities are marked with cautious optimism as there is still a sense of apprehension.

What is the best project you have been involved in?

I am currently involved with developing some student residential properties in Upper Allen Street, Sheffield - an area of regeneration. We are working on a new concept in student housing as well as designing accommodation for young professionals which I am really pleased with. These will create good revenue for the client and it has allowed me to understand the student market better.

What is your favourite building in the region and why?

I like the First Direct Arena because it provides a cultural facility which Leeds has needed for a long time. Architecturally, I love how it sits, its shape and the way the lights change colour when it’s dark which ensures it can be seen from a distance. There is a definite energy and vibrancy about it.

If you could change one thing to improve the property industry in this region what would it be?

It would be really beneficial if people within the industry were more straightforward and direct and there was open communication. If people were more honest then deals would be finalised more quickly and there would be better outcomes.

I have been taught different things about being commercial from some former bosses and colleagues while others have taught me about having humility and an outward focus with which to engage with people.
