Pulse and Cocktails: Sex shop by the side of the A63 lodges bid to keep trading

A sex shop by the side of the A63 has lodged a bid to keep trading.

Pulse and Cocktails, on the A63 near Brough before the road mergers into the M62, has lodged an application to renew its sex establishment licence with East Riding Council.

Sex establishments including shops like Pulse and Cocktails are required to renew their licence every year.

They are also required to follow special rules including their interiors not being visible to passers by and no adult material or literature can be displayed in its windows.

In 2019, Hull Live paid a visit to Pulse and Cocktails, based in a former Little Chef, to see what it is really like on the inside.

The store is one of two in the area, with the other in Hull’s Mount Pleasant.

Then manager Jacqueline Watson said the company made a conscious decision to make the interior as bright as possible, contrary to the image of sex shops in the popular imagination.

She said: “We have quite a few regulars who will come in and tell us their life story and they end up trusting us.

“Sometimes it is like counselling and we can help give advice on ways to spice things up in the bedroom,” Jacqueline said. “I wouldn’t say we help save marriages but we can certainly help make things better.

“The key is that we do not judge and all this becomes normal for us and everything remains within these four walls.

“People have to come to us rather than just popping in while passing. I would say the Hull store gets younger people while we get older customers and couples at this one.

“You also get more lorry drivers than you do at the Hull store.

“Staff may be able to get away with not saying much at some shops but you cannot afford to be shy here.

“You have to be outgoing but also knowledgeable of the products we’re selling.”
