Variety honours former Business Awards chairman

The Variety Yorkshire Business Awards recognised the work of its former secretary and chairman who directed events that raised more than £3m in funds.

Martin Shaw, a senior lawyer at Pinsent Masons, stepped down as organiser of the event last year after 23 years in charge.

Variety Yorkshire barker and chairman Duncan Syers praised Mr Shaw’s commitment, dedication and generosity. He said: “For an individual to have raised more than £3m to help needy children throughout Yorkshire is an outstanding achievement.”

Mr Shaw thanked the charity for the Special Recognition Award but said the success of the event was a team effort.

“You’ve been really generous, it’s not me alone,” he said. “I’ve helped to organise things with a great team around me and the Variety Club Committee, it’s successive secretaries and assistants have also helped.”

“At the end of the day, it’s made me proud, it’s made my committee members proud and I hope you’ve enjoyed it and just continue giving.”
