Some people resented their bosses because of their attitude to “simply getting the job done”, a national survey of more than 3,000 employees found.

The study, by Investors in People, showed that 55% of those polled in Yorkshire believed their employer did not care about their health, leaving many feeling less motivated.

More than a quarter (27%) said they had considered looking for a new job as a result.

Most sickness absence was genuine, although those unhappy in their job were more likely to feign illness, said the report.

Paul Devoy, head of Investors in People, said: “Organisations in Yorkshire need to see staff health and well-being as crucial to their business and staff retention.

“Our research shows that happier staff are less likely to take time off sick. What’s more, companies offering health and well-being perks will see real business benefits.

“They don’t have to be costly - desk posture assessment and support or complimentary fresh fruit in the office can have real positive impact on an employee’s health and make them feel valued.”
