John Lewis' managing director Andy Street said store trading was tougher as the group awaits awaits the final pre-Christmas rush. Despite this its stores in York, Tunbridge Wells, Tamworth, Croydon, Heathrow and St Pancras reported sales growth, with relative strength also coming from Peterborough, Glasgow and Milton Keynes.

"Total sales last week were £155m, growth of three per cent on 2014, and thus maintaining the solid run we have enjoyed in the run-up to Christmas," said Mr Street.

"Again it was online which powered forward with a 15 per cent advance, propelled by visits from mobile devices. As in previous weeks Distribution's delivery of these orders has been faultless, thus we go into the final push in a strong position."

John Lewis saw strong sales in phones, watches, cameras and audio.

It also reported good demand for gifts for the home and furniture as customers prepare to seat friends and family around the Christmas table.

The lack of cold weather hit fashion sales as customers usually need a prolonged cold snap before they splash out on winter clothing.

"The busiest days for shops are still ahead," said Mr Street.

"Nevertheless, it looks as though we can judge it another successful Christmas for John Lewis – an achievement only possible through the hard work of all teams across the business."
