'Big sense of excitement' - Star of The Yorkshire Vet tells of Great Yorkshire Show memories

Celebrity vet Peter Wright has spoken of his own childhood memories of the Great Yorkshire Show (GYS) as he paid tribute to the role it plays in inspiring the next generation.

The author and TV personality, star of Channel 5's hit show The Yorkshire Vet, was among guest stars at yesterday's event (Jul 15).

He helped judge some of the children's competitions, and said it was so important to encourage initiatives such as those set up by the YAS around where food comes from.

"I'm still a child at heart," he said. "I have been coming here as long as I can remember, there was always a big sense of excitement."

As a boy, he said, his family would have a "routine" for each year's trip. First was the cattle sheds, then the sheep, followed by the goats and pigs.

"It's vital for us to appreciate the work that farmers do," he said now of the inspiration the show builds in inspiring the work of the next generation.

"We must not lose sight of the fact that it's an agricultural show primarily. And the welfare systems we have here are second to none."

Mr Wright is among a host of celebrity guests taking part in events around the Harrogate showground.

Kelvin and Liz Fletcher of ITV’s Fletchers on the Farm appeared on Tuesday, helping to hand out prizes in the sheep competitions.

Today (Jul 16), Jules Hudson of BBC’s Escape to the Country is to appear, and tomorrow (Jul 17) it is the turn of Harriet Cowan who featured in Clarkson’s Farm.
