Malton Show still going strong after 130 years

Lean livestock and vintage machines helped to draw the crowds for the 130th instalment of a popular one-day agricultural show in North Yorkshire.

From shire horses to cattle, sheep and goats, a full array of animals filled the competitive classes as the return of Malton Show enjoyed a day in the sunshine.

Today’s spectacle was staged by Malton Agricultural Society at its Scampston Park showground where the addition of a classic cars section, sponsored by Malton-based Classic & Sportscar Centre, was a new feature for this year’s show.

Extra space had to be allocated to accommodate a high number of entries as vintage vehicle enthusiasts from all over Yorkshire were enticed along to exhibit their pride and joys at the event.

Spectators saw cars that were manufactured over seven decades, from a 1920s Morris Bullnose to a 1967 Aston Martin DB6.

Young visitors to Malton Show enjoyed have-a-go’ activities, there was an It’s a Knockout competition involving inflatable obstacles, as well as a dog show, craft fair and a tug-of-war contest.

But this is a show that still retains agriculture at its core and besides the championship classes for farmer’s livestock, there was a farm machinery display, a vintage tractor drive and sheep dog trials.

Another insight of rural life came in the form of a parade of hounds performed by members of the Middleton Hunt.

The thousands of visitors who attended helped raise money for Malton Show’s nominated charity, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
