Nominations now open for restaurants, farm shops and food producers at the top of their game
Sustainability has become a significant factor in consumer decision-making when it comes to food in recent years, along with ethical practices – particularly after the horse meat scandal that hit the UK a decade ago.
As well as knowing what we are eating and how healthy it is, we also want to be able to source where it has come from. That’s why here at Eat Game, we celebrate the best in the business when it comes to field-to-fork.
There is no place better for that than the Clarendon Inn in Hebden, whose team was crowned champion of champions at the 2023 Eat Game Awards – the accolade given for receiving the most public votes across all categories.
Chef patron Lionel Strub may be from Alsace originally, but he has fully embraced life in rural Yorkshire, stalking and shooting game, which is then prepared in his kitchen before putting it straight on the menu at the Clarendon.
Lionel said: “This isn’t just about cooking game, this is living and breathing it. We have five shoots based at the pub alone, which is amazing.”
He added: “I want to show the world that you can win awards for game but also that it’s a tremendous food and incredibly sustainable. It’s full of goodness and has a happy life, which has to be better than intensive farming – for me game is the way forward.”

The annual awards, which are held in March, are made up of eight categories: best game butcher, best game chef, best pub or restaurant, best game educator, best influencer, best added value product, plus awards for both small retailers and those with multiple outlets.
With the nominations now open for the 2024 awards, we want to see more businesses from this stunning part of the UK making the headlines. We want to hear from, and about, Yorkshire restaurants, farm shops, game dealers and food producers who are making game meat the star of the show.
And, as well as helping businesses to gain the recognition they deserve, you will play a part in normalising game meat. Surely, it’s time we stopped keeping it a secret and shouted about just how fabulous it is from the rooftops.
What’s more, you can celebrate the winners with us at the awards. By nominating, you will be automatically entered into a draw to win two tickets to the awards dinner*.
