Bradford school turns away more pupils over uniforms

Hanson Academy, in Bradford, continued with the policy yesterday, sending 33 children home to change and 11 returning.

On Tuesday it turned away 152 pupils and on Wednesday 63 more were sent home. The school’s principal Elizabeth Churton said earlier this week that 92 per cent of pupils had abided by the school’s uniform policy on the first day and that the majority of children returned within the hour.

Parents were warned last month that children would be sent home if they were breaking the rules.

Ms Churton said the school was only upholding a uniform policy which had been in place for several years.

She said it was important that children understood the need to dress appropriately for school.

Rules include not being allowed to wear patterned trousers, jumpers or trainers or come to school with more than one earring in each ear or with an unnatural hair colour. The decision to turn away pupils at the school gate has angered some parents with scores of comments left on the Hanson Academy Facebook page this week.

Linzi Stansfield wrote: “Provide my son with the perfect shoes and then he can have the education he has a legal right to.” She added that she could not afford “to be pandering to whims”.
