York Minster announced last week it is to shut its preparatory school at the end of the summer term amid a multi-million pound funding shortfall.

Now student Puyuan Ge has spoken of his stunned delight to find he has been offered a place on scholarship at Eton College from September.

"To be totally honest, even though I worked my hardest and tried my best for the auditions and tests, getting those results was still beyond my wildest dreams," the 13-year-old from Copmanthorpe said.

Puyuan is said by The Minster School to be a "superbly accomplished" pianist and violinist, securing him a highly competitive music scholarship.

But with his "exceptional" academic record, he has also secured the infamously difficult King’s Scholarship, which is granted to just 15 students.

Eton College, an independent boarding school for boys in Berkshire, was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, and remains one of the most prestigious in the world.

Every year over 1,000 boys apply to Eton from around the world, and just 260 are successful.

Puyuan, one of six boys from The Minster School to secure a place at Eton since 1995, is the first in its history to do so on a double scholarship.
