Bradford’s vice chancellor Professor Mark Cleary said: “The university is dedicated to sustainability; it is built into our decision making process. We are proud to continue to set high standards with our Ecoversity programme.”

The university recently carried out a major library refurbishment which achieved carbon savings through insulation and natural ventilation.

Its student village, The Green, rated highest of all – making it the most sustainable building in the world.

Sheffield University also improved – climbing 63 places from its 2012 ranking. The university’s estates and facilities management director Keith Lilley said: “We’re absolutely delighted with our significant leap up the table this year, a result which is a credit to the commitment from staff at all levels of the organisation to do their bit to help us improve our environmental impact, as well as a programme of major development activities across the university estate.”
