The Mount School York has been at the forefront of providing an excellent education for girls since 1785. Today it continues to develop its expertise and offering to enhance its girl-focused education.

The independent school recently introduced the ‘Girls On Board’ programme in which, through pastoral sessions, girls are empowered with tools to interpret relationships and group dynamics in a way where they can positively respond to changes and take ownership of solutions.

Inspiring young minds
York’s only all-through school for girls aged three to 18 benefits from a curriculum and care tailored to suit girls’ needs. Their learning journey begins in the Junior School. The school’s cross-curricular creative curriculum provides girls with opportunities to explore their natural curiosity and discover their own minds. Smaller classes mean teachers can provide girls with the independence to reflect, consolidate and transfer their learning in a way that suits each individual.
“Academic enrichment, blended with co-curricular activities such as music, performing arts, drama and sport, create a powerful holistic educational entity,” explains Mr Griffiths.
“We don’t know what the future society looks like exactly. So as educators we need to provide our girls with a comprehensive education and the skills and emotional intelligence to adapt to the needs of our society. I believe in the power of super-curricular activities, those that promote academic learning and enquiry beyond the confines of the classroom and the curriculum.”
Enrichment and excellence
2022 saw the introduction of The Mount School’s Borealis Academic Society. The Borealis Expeditions heralded a new era in super-curricular enrichment and academic excellence for the school.
Introduced by David Griffiths, Principal, the Borealis Society is a super-curricular programme, extending academic learning outside of the classroom and into real world. Putting pupils in scenarios and situations that will make a great impact on a student's CV. The first expedition sets off for Iceland in July.
Sixth form pupils will take part in a mountain expedition, study academic topics and attend a reception at the British Embassy in Reykjavik to meet the UK Ambassador to Iceland, who is a former pupil of the Mount School.
Boarding and day pupils
The Mount opened as a boarding school and now welcomes day pupils from across Yorkshire, with many choosing to flexi-board. Full boarding may be the right option for some families but, for others a more flexible approach is necessary. Girls can board at The Mount School on a full, weekly, or flexible basis.
As the school approaches its 238th year, it is clear that - just like its founders did - The Mount School has large ambitions for their girls. Girls leave The Mount intellectually curious, emotionally confident, and socially responsible, with a lifelong love of learning and ambitious aspirations!
