Yorkshire school A-Level results: Pupils across the region celebrate as they receive their exam results

Thousands of Yorkshire school pupils had cause to celebrate as they received their A-level results today.

This year is only the second time pupils in the UK have sat summer exams since 2019. Grades were generated by schools in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, with results based on internal assessment and work produced over the course of pupils’ studies.

This year’s A-level students deserve praise for showing resilience - The Yorkshire Post says

The Class of 2023 have done incredibly well despite this being their first experience of public examinations, said Sue Woodroofe, Principal of The Grammar School at Leeds. Mrs Woodroofe said: “I’m extremely proud of our students who, like so many of their generation, have had to contend with learning through lockdowns. These outstanding results are testimony to their resilience and hard work. They should feel incredibly proud of their achievements and excited about the next chapter in their lives.”

Sylvia Brett, Principal of Harrogate Ladies’ College said: “These are an exceptionally good set of results across a huge range of subjects and the class of 2023 should be so proud of everything they have achieved. They have shown a huge appetite for hard work and incredible resilience. It’s very rewarding to see them propelled into the next exciting stage of their lives." Among those celebrating today were Sophie McHugh who achieved A*AAA. With her grades now secured Sophie is heading to Durham University to study Engineering, she said: “Becoming an engineer is that bit closer today after these results. I’ve had a great time at school – great teachers and great support. I’ve really been encouraged to follow my own path and my own dreams.”

Morgan Watson’s dream to study at the University of Oxford will become reality after the 18-year- old student from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) scored top grades in her A-levels. Morgan from Bramley achieved A*, A, A and B grades in biology, physics, maths and psychology and will take up a place at Trinity College to read biomedical sciences in October. Morgan, who studied up to GCSE level at the city’s Leeds West Academy, joined GSAL in Year 12 on a full bursary. An inspiring biology teacher at Leeds West Academy encouraged Morgan to explore the subject more deeply. “My love for the subject developed more during A-levels, which is why I decided to apply for biomedical sciences. I love learning about the human body, particularly genetics and neuroscience.”
