Furloughed Leeds shop manager joins police during coronavirus pandemic

A Leeds shop manager who was placed on furlough due to the coronavirus pandemic has decided to stay busy by volunteering for the police.

Stephanie Kovrlija is normally the manager at Sports Bike Shop on Regent Street, however, the store has closed as part of lock-down measures.

Wanting to "make a difference" during the Covid-19 outbreak, Stephanie volunteered to become a Special Constable.

She now volunteers full time in the east Bradford area.

Stephanie said: "It's the best decision I’ve ever made in becoming a Special.

"I strive to make a difference and during this challenging time I feel that I have a duty to step up and help my community."

This is Special Constable who has been furloughed from her full time job as store manager for the Sports Bike Shop in Leeds. She is now volunteering full time as a Special Constable serving the area of Bradford East. #ThankYou #BeSpecial @WYP_Specials

Special Constables are people who give up their free time to volunteer for the police.

Volunteer special constables have now contibuted working more than 2500 hours in the last week.

Currently 13 Special Constables are supporting the front line by working full-time during the pandemic.

A number of employers are supporting these Special Constables at this time, which include Lloyds, Morrisons, Next, BT, Capita, DWP and LNER.

Assistant Chief Constable Angela Williams of West Yorkshire Police said: "This is a great example of the people of West Yorkshire coming together and helping front line services during this challenging time.

"In these exceptional circumstances it’s great to see that these Special Constables giving up more of their time to help the whole community of West Yorkshire.

"I would like to thank all of our officers and staff during this time for the incredible work they are all doing to keep West Yorkshire safe."
