Three in every 20 Covid patients in Yorkshire hospitals are on a ventilator, figures show

Nearly 150 people with Covid-19 were on a mechanical ventilator in hospitals in Yorkshire and the North East this week, according to official data, representing 15 per cent of all patients in the region who are in hospital with the virus.

The figures from NHS England, which go up to Tuesday 27 October, show Leeds hospitals had the highest number of patients on a ventilator at 19, out of 236 patients being treated.

Sheffield, which had the most hospital admissions from the infection, with 249 people being treated in hospital on Tuesday, had 18 patients on a ventilator.

The numbers for both Leeds and Sheffield have risen rapidly since the start of September, as the second wave of the pandemic began, as during the summer, there were periods when there were no Covid patients on ventilators in Yorkshire.

A total of 10 people were on ventilators in Barnsley, which is 10 per cent of all the people with Covid being treated in hospital there, though this figure has remained relatively flat over the last two weeks.

Ventilators are used when the patient's lungs start to fail, ensuring the person can breathe while they fight off the infection.

Most people with coronavirus recover without needing ventilation, or even hospitalisation, though they are a vital tool in exceptional cases.
