Family and friends of Yorkshire teen raise £23k for Brain Tumour Charity in her memory

A West Yorkshire woman has been nominated for two awards in recognition of her fundraising efforts in memory of her daughter.

Susan Mountain, from Roberttown, Liversedge, began fundraising for Yorkshire's Brain Tumour Charity, as well as other local cancer and children’s charities, after her daughter Maci died in October 2017, aged 13.

Just two months before, Maci was diagnosed with DIPG, an aggressive, fast-growing childhood brain tumour. Susan and Team Maci, a group of Maci's family and friends, have raised more than £23,000 for YBTC since 2018.

Currently, their funds are going towards Leeds Neuropathology Research Tissue Bank, a resource to support the work of researchers of neurological cancers in finding more effective treatments and ultimately a cure.

Susan says: “We had so many questions, and so little hope – we want to change that so that no family has to go through what we did. We have fundraised tirelessly to raise money for support for children and families like ours, but to also fund vital research.”

Susan has been nominated for two Yorkshire Choice Awards in recognition of her efforts. The awards ceremony will take place on June 9.
