Jailed doctor can work again, panel rules

a watchdog has ruled a hospital doctor can work again following the end of a year-long suspension imposed after he was jailed for the manslaughter of a patient in Yorkshire.

Mother-of-two Lisa Quinn, 37, died in 2008 after three days of treatment for a kidney infection at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Consultant urologist Sudhanshu Garg was jailed for two years after admitting gross negligence manslaughter.

A Fitness to Practise Panel of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in Manchester yesterday told him he had “paid your debt to society in full”. It concluded public confidence in doctors would not be undermined if he worked again although his fitness remained impaired.

The panel was told he intended to retrain in India before returning to the UK. It ruled he could practise under supervision and imposed a number of conditions to be reviewed in 18 months.
