The former rugby league player dropped down on one knee and proposed to partner Lee-Anne Brown with a stunning square-cut diamond at the Huddersfield Birth Centre.

He picked his romantic moment after shedding “a little tear” when baby Alexander was born in quick time – just over an hour after the couple arrived at the centre at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

He said: “I had thought about proposing on Valentine’s Day but this was even more special. It will forever be extra special and always a little bit different.”

Mr Robinson kept the ring in the pocket of his combat trousers ready for the special moment.

His fiancée, who is a nurse at Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield, said: “I did not think he could surprise me.

“We were having tea and toast after the birth and relaxing when he suddenly dropped down onto one knee.

“The birth could not have gone any better. It was quick.”

Mr Robinson, a former rugby league player with Wakefield, Halifax and Dewsbury, now coaches the under-16s at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The couple, who have been together for a year, live in Wakefield. They chose the birth centre as Miss Brown’s second son was born there four years ago and her friend is a midwife there.

More than 3,500 babies have been born at the centre since it opened six years ago.

Birth centre manager Carol Sarr said: “We are all thrilled and delighted to welcome baby Alexander and celebrate his parents’ engagement.

“It will always be a special day for us too.”
