Appeal to transform 'cold' old Wakefield church with £290k fundraiser

A church in Wakefield has launched an appeal to help transform its "uncomfortably cold" old building into a warm space for all.

The GoFundMe appeal for St Helen's Church in Sandal, Wakefield has already raised £6,500 towards its £290,000 goal.

Reaching this target would mean it can install a new heating and lighting system, as well as solar panels in a move towards becoming greener and more environmentally friendly.

The Rev Lizzy Brothwood, curate of the church, described it as being “uncomfortably cold”, but has plans to create a “sustainable and welcoming space for all”.

"St Helen’s has long been a place of heritage, worship, and community," she said.

"But today, the building faces a practical challenge: it is often uncomfortably cold."

The heating system isn't fit for purpose, she went on to explain, which creates an unwelcoming space in colder months and adds to the church's environmental footprint. "We believe that a warm, inviting space is essential to fostering community life," she said.

Plans would be in two parts, starting with a new infrared heating and lighting system at a cost of £214,000. The second aspect would see solar panels fitted, at a cost of £50,000, making the church setting more environmentally friendly and supporting its sustainability.

“Creating an environment where people feel comfortable encourages attendance, supports local activities, and strengthens connections,” said the Revd.

"Offering a genuine, warm welcome is at the heart of our vision,” she added.

"Every donation, no matter the size, will help us move closer to transforming St Helen’s into a sustainable and welcoming space for all."
