Elsecar Heritage Railway came from the South Yorkshire coal industry when the line was built to load iron and coal from Elsecar to Mexborough in 1850. The engines ran for the final time in 1964 when Cortonwood Colliery closed. It was converted to Elsecar Heritage Railway in 2006 to bring new life to the line.
