Plans to convert Sunday School into four flats withdrawn

An application to convert a Sunday School building in Yorkshire into four flats has been withdrawn.

The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of All Saints had applied to convert the building at All Saints Church, Savile Road, in Elland, into apartments.

The application had brought seven objections and one representation of support to Calderdale Council, which would decide on the application.

Objectors were concerned about loss of a building that had also been used as a community centre – one said they used to be a member of a scout group meeting there and another said a playgroup meets there.

Objectors said it houses the 7th Elland Scout Group and the Elland Under 5s Community Playgroup and claimed the alternative space which might be provided would not be big enough.

The letter of support said the property had to be run by what was now an ageing congregation, and argued the building in question “is now in a serious state of dilapidation.”

The latter added the groups concerned had been given 12 months notice which the supporting writer considered “fair”.

Agent for the applicants, Roger Lee Planning Ltd, pointed out in supporting documents that the Canon Winter Centre is the basement of the church itself has been upgraded to form community space which would be the future location for the groups.

But the agent has now written to Calderdale Council to notify the authority the plan was being withdrawn.
