Rare 1970s footage of The Flying Scotsman leaving York for Scarborough

Like a ghost from another age this rare archive footage shows The Flying Scotsman proudly steaming out of York station.

The BBC footage of the famous steam engine heading to Scarborough was first broadcast in April 1974.

The Blue Peter, Special Assignment episode was presented by Valerie Singleton.

"York is railway mad... and one of the few places where they allow steam haul specials," she told viewers.

"Today The Flying Scotsman is heading a trip to Scarborough. Even in this York is keen to keep its past alive. It was an impressive sight and the train load of enthusiasts weren't going to miss a minute of it."
