Passengers on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which ran services for the first time in 2020 yesterday, will have seen much to recognise as they boarded steam trains at Pickering Station - but plenty had changed.

Staff and volunteers were wearing face masks, trains ran non-stop, crowds at platforms were reduced and customers were encouraged to book private compartments for their family groups.

The NYMR has not operated a timetable since last October, having been forced to postpone its summer season opening in April when the lockdown was enforced.

Tickets must now be booked in advance for August journeys, all of which will be steam-hauled and will not run into Whitby.
