The amazing secret gardens in Yorkshire that are only open for a few days each year

The Old Vicarage
These beautiful gardens across Yorkshire are all open for a brief period this summer.
They're mostly privately owned gardens or plant nurseries that aren't usually open to the public - but are allowing visitors on certain days this summer, or by private arrangement, as part of the National Gardens Scheme. Most have a small entry free for adults but are free for children to visit. Refreshments including home-made teas are served.
This Queen Anne house near Selby has a four-acre walled garden with kitchen garden, herb maze, pool, orchard and Italian garden. Open: June 6, from 1-4pm. Entry 5, children free
Shandy Hall in Coxwold was the home of 18th-century author Laurence Sterne and is owned by a charitable trust. Two walled gardens and wildflower areas where 430 species of moth live. Open: June 7, 6.30-8pm. Entry 3.
This country house near Ripon is owned by Lord and Lady Downshire. There are river walks, wooded pleasure grounds, a wild flower meadow and Victorian walled garden. Open: June 9, 2-5pm. Entry 5.
Walled flower garden in Whixley which overlooks a deer park and has hidden seating areas and romantic corners. Home-made teas are also served. Open: June 9, 1.30-5pm. Entry 6.
Suburban garden in the Cookridge area of Leeds. Split-level garden with rockery, fruit tree arbour, tea house and Oriental seating area. Open: June 9, 12-4.30pm. Entry 3.50.
Country garden near Huddersfield with Pennine views on a steep slope. Terraced kitchen and cutting garden, gazebo, pond, shade garden, collection of pots and tender plants. Open: June 9, 1.30 - 4.30pm. Entry 4.
Large garden near York with wildflower meadow, orchard, rose garden, woodland, secret garden with tropical plants and two ponds. Open: June 9, 2-5pm. Entry 3.50.
Two-acre country garden in Fridaythorpe with Hobbit house, sunken trampoline, tennis court, hidden paths, fruit cage and wire sculptures. Open: June 14, 5.30-8.30. Entry 6.
This moated medieval manor house near Ripon has been in the same family since 1310. The gardens have been extensively restored. Open: June 14, 2-5pm. Entry 6.
The one-acre garden in Bradfield, near Sheffield, with Pennine views is owned by garden writer and University of Sheffield landscape architecture professor Nigel Dunnett. Open: June 16, 2-7pm. Entry 5.
Secluded cottage garden in Driffield with potager and summerhouse, terrace, water feature and old farming memorabilia. Open: June 16, 1-5pm. Entry 6.
An all-white garden near York with 'secret' vibes. Three sections all planted for scent. Summerhouse and greenhouse. Open: June 16, 10am - 5pm. Entry 4.
The hall, near Harrogate, is the home of Sir James Aykroyd. Four acres with formal garden, ornamental orchard, large pond, stream and Victorian greenhouse. Open: By private arrangement throughout summer.
Two-acre garden near Malton. Walled garden, lime avenue, flower meadow, vegetable garden and Victorian greenhouse. Open: June 23, 1-5pm or by private arrangement. Entry 4.
