The Piece Hall and Wentworth Woodhouse to receive emergency cash from government's Culture Recovery Fund

Two of Yorkshire's premier heritage assets are among the beneficiaries of an emergency grant funding pot from the government.

A total of 56 historic attractions, charitable trusts or heritage sector businesses have received a share of the £1.5billion Culture Recovery Fund windfall to help them revive following extended lockdown closures.

The money will be spent on repair and maintenance work, keeping venues open and protecting staff jobs.

Historic England worked with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to choose the organisations that would receive assistance.

Other big names from the Yorkshire heritage sector to be included are Wentworth Woodhouse, Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, Selby Abbey, Barnsley Museums, Ilkley Toy Museum, Castle Howard, Magna, Bramley Baths in Leeds, The Foundry in Sheffield, the Bedern Hall in York, Sheffield Cathedral, Leeds Library and Wensleydale Railway.

Historic England chief executive Duncan Wilson said: “It is heartening to see grants, both large and small, from the Culture Recovery Fund helping heritage sites and organisations across the country which have been hit hard by the effects of Covid-19.

"These grants range from giving skilled craft workers the chance to keep their trades alive to helping heritage organisations pay the bills, and to kick-starting repair works at our best-loved historic sites. The funding is an essential lifeline for our heritage and the people who work tirelessly to conserve it for us all, so that we can hand it on to future generations.”
