Nostalgia: Scarborough Mere pulled the crowds

CLOSED and forgotten now for many except anglers, the Scarborough Mere was one of the most popular crowd-pulling venues of its day.

The attraction was run by the council and was the home of the Hispaniola, the pirate ship for children who sailed to an island and dug in the sand for doubloons. The mere was also used for water-skiing and had pedaloes and rowing boats. There was a putting green and a café.

Other parts of Scarborough such as Peasholm are now the place for rowing and fun boats, and the Hispaniola, after being left in dry dock at North Bay, is now sailing up and down the coast with a new generation of young people as temporary crew.
