Adel Tap, Adel: 'I visited this Yorkshire taproom in an up-and-coming Yorkshire surburb - it stands out from the crowd'

It’s funny how things go in cycles, isn’t it.

Over the years, suburbia hasn’t always enjoyed a good press, often seen as boring and monotonous and lacking the excitement, diversity and vibrancy of our big cities.

And yet it seems to me that our suburbs are enjoying something of a renaissance right now.

These might just be the musings of an armchair psychologist, but it feels that as the world gets faster and louder more people are looking for something calmer, which has brought them back to places like those they knew growing up.

Or maybe it’s just an age thing.

Twenty years ago, you couldn’t have paid me to go round a garden centre, and now the idea of picking up a new penstemon or veronica for the back garden can be a weekend highlight.

Either way, something has been happening. In Leeds, areas like Oakwood, Chapel Allerton and Meanwood have a burgeoning food and drink scene, and now you can probably add Adel to the list.

This leafy north Leeds suburb has seen the likes of The Foundation, a bar run by Meanwood Brewery, and Dastaan, an excellent Indian restaurant, pop up in recent years.

Adel Tap, which opened at the end of 2024, is another newbie.

There’s been a trend for new bars and pubs to have a DIY feel to them, which makes this independent tap room, with its stylish leather-style stools and high tables, stand out from the crowd.

The exposed brick walls, dark green colours and Venetian-themed paintings (I’m sure someone can explain the connection) create an air of sumptuousness, enhanced by the swish-looking mezzanine.

On the beer front there’s a decent choice including the likes of Leeds Pale, Timothy Taylor’s Landlord and a couple of excellent picks from the irrepressible Kirkstall Brewery.

There’s also a cocktails board and a decent wine list.

Outdoor benches and tables looking out onto Otley Road might not offer the world’s greatest view, but I’d happily sit here in the sunshine and sup a pint or two.

In fact, I probably will.
