Off the shelf

Here is this week's top pick of good value bottles to savour

York Minster Ale, Morrisons, 1.67 for 500ml. This dry, hoppy ale is a welcome addition to Morrisons. Made by York Brewery using crystal malts and Challenger hops for a balanced, clean finish with a satisfying bite.

Montana Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2009, New Zealand, Asda, down from 9.49 to 4.83 until May 24. After three big harvests in a row New Zealand is awash with wine, so prices have crumbled. The result is that this delicious crisp, zesty, gooseberry and capsicum-charged Sauvignon Blanc costs less than it did almost a decade ago.

Langmeil GWH Viognier 2008, Australia, Rhythm and Booze (large stores only), 9.99. From one of my favourite small Barossa producers who over-deliver on quality every time.Try this for its deep peachy, apricot fruit, touches of passion fruit and delicious mid-palate weight with a clean, apple-fresh finish.

French Connection Ctes du Ventoux 2008, Morrisons, down from 9.99 to 4.99 until May 23. It is this kind of ridiculous high-low pricing which stops the drinking public from buying anything that isn't on special offer. Buy this now for its soft, spiced mulberry fruit.
