The Golden Lion, Osmotherley - a pub that ticks all the boxes

How lovely to end up at the Golden Lion in Osmotherley on a bank holiday weekend, even if it was by accident.

Our original destination was unexpectedly closed, and in our confusion, we took a wrong turn and ended up on a very narrow road which took us up and over the most stunning part of the North York Moors.

We worked out we were on the road to Osmotherley, so were delighted at the turn of events as the village is home to the famous Golden Lion pub, which I have not been to for years.

As it was late afternoon, the pub was quiet, with most of the tables set for dinner, but there was a lovely small seating area near the bar for drinkers as well. So, we snuggled down next to the bar in the charming centuries-old pub with its old dark pews, painted stone fireplace, log burner and twinkling candlelight from each table.

Slowly the place began to fill with walkers, cyclists, and several locals chatting at the bar, and soon, a large family gathering with a brood of young children arrived for dinner. By the time we had finished an excellent pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord, the place was buzzing.

Alongside the Landlord, which is regular on the pumps, was their own Golden Lion Pale Ale brewed by Three Brother Brewing Co, which coincidently on the pump clip has the smiling face of the man behind the bar - who we assume is the landlord. There's Emergency IPA from the same brewery and Jorvik from Rudgate Brewery.

The Golden Lion has long had an excellent reputation for hearty, pub food, and this has not changed, given the number of those now eating. As a result, the menu is chock full of great pub dishes. Sadly, we didn't have time to eat, but we were already planning when to go back.
