The Treasury, Whitby: The drinks menu is as impressive as the architecture

The good people of Whitby (and me) have been waiting with bated breath for the grand opening of the Treasury, the old HSBC bank on Baxtergate. The Lady Mayor cut the ribbon in June, and they had a bit of a do. My invitation must have got lost in the post. Fortunately, it’s open all day, all week, so I called in when the fuss had died down and had a leisurely look around.

There’s a lot going on. It’s a stunning Grade II listed building built in 1891, so if you were hoping that original features would be salvaged, you’ve got your wish; the tiled entrance is spectacular, with its gleaming oak door and fabulous fanlight above. A huge crystal chandelier gives a hint of what’s to come – and as I walked into what would have been the banking hall, my jaw dropped. The room is so high there’s almost another weather system up there; the extraordinary Wedgewood blue, vaulted ceiling has intricate plaster ribbon-wafting cherubs, and from the newly constructed mezzanine floor there are fabulous views over the harbour. The drinks menu is as impressive as the architecture: cocktails, a great wine list, more gins than you can shake a stick at, just the one cask ale, Tim Taylor Landlord, but lots of kegs, including Brixton Reliance Pale Ale, Guinness – ‘the best in Whitby’ according to the bar manager – and Cruzcampo.

There’s a large room at one side where you can bring your dog, and the Bank Manager’s Office has more wood panelling, comfy chairs and interesting artwork on the walls. There’s quite a lot of choice, food-wise. A dining restaurant is due to open next year, but in the meantime there are small plates (chicken liver pate, prawn cocktail), sandwiches (Whitby crab, cheese savoury) and sharing boards (charcuterie, cheese and fruit). There’s a good selection of cakes and decent coffee too. Owner Ali Hussain has been painstakingly planning and preparing every last detail to bring to fruition the vision he had to “deliver something unique and special for Whitby”. Hats off, Ali, you’ve done that with bells and whistles.
