Woodies, Headingley: The historic pub on the Otley Run which feels more like a local
Woodies, or Woodies Craft Ale House to give the place its Sunday name, will be familiar to many pub goers in Leeds.
It’s a pitstop on the ‘Otley Run', a popular pub crawl (though how popular it is amongst locals depends on who you speak to), that snakes its way from Far Headingley down Otley Road and into Leeds city centre.
Thanks to its sporting links, Headingley Stadium is home to Yorkshire County Cricket Club as well as Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Tykes, this is a bustling part of the city, especially at weekends.
But while the Original Oak, another popular Headingley watering hole, is seen as a bit of a student haunt, Woodies, part of the Greene King stable, feels a bit more like a ‘local.’

Believed to date back to the late 19th century, Woodies, with its timber-framed façade gives the impression of stepping back in time, but inside there’s a more contemporary feel to the décor with ample high tables and chairs dotted around, and a plethora of big screens ensuring sports fans are well catered for.
It’s a lively spot in the evenings with regular quiz nights, as well as live music, a bi-monthly poker night, and a karaoke night every fortnight, if that’s your thing.
There’s a decent beer selection, including some interesting choices such as Vocation Brewery’s Crush Hour and Northern Monk’s Faith, as well as offerings from Jubel and, as you would expect, Greene King.
The wine list is decent and varied, certainly for a pub, and in the warmer months the outside beer garden is a popular spot.
There’s a food menu featuring plenty of pub classics, and while I can’t vouch for them, the homemade scotch egg and sticky pickle sausage roll bar snacks look rather enticing.
Headingley can be a pleasant place to while away an afternoon or evening with friends, and I tend to find that a drink or two in Woodies enhances any visit.
