Yorkshire gastropub The Star Inn at Harome targeted by criminals during coronavirus closure

One of Yorkshire's Michelin-starred restaurants has been targeted by opportunistic thieves after it was forced to close due to the coronavirus crisis.

The Star Inn at Harome in the North York Moors is owned by chef Andrew Pern, who has a Michelin star.

Pern closed the pub and his other businesses - which include The Star Inn the City and Mr P's Curious Tavern in York and Star Inn the Harbour in Whitby - after the government ordered restaurants and cafes to shut to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

But the father-of-six's 14th-century thatched inn was then targeted by thieves who were aware of the closure.

A group were seen behaving suspiciously in the vicinity but they did not manage to enter the building.

"Just to let fellow rural businesses know we had 'visitors' last night, obviously sussing the place out. All security is in place here and police were informed,so keep alert. There is more than one virus about."

Fellow Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks has closed his nearby gastropub The Black Swan at Oldstead and his Roots restaurant in York.
