Beautiful barn conversion for sale near Ilkley is full of character and charm

Like many visitors before them, Peter and Diane Robinson, came on holiday to the Yorkshire Dales and were smitten.

That was 1997 and the couple, who lived in London, then followed a common trajectory of return visits followed by buying a holiday cottage and then finally moving full time to a larger home in God’s Own County.

Now, the beautiful barn conversion they call home is on the market as they prepare to downsize.

The Grade II-listed property in the village of Addingham, which is close to Bolton Abbey and Ilkley, is everything a barn conversion should be.

Original features, including beams and stone walls, have been exposed, the furniture and furnishings they have chosen suit the rustic property perfectly and the place is packed with art.

When they bought the building, which is part of a barn complex that includes their old cottage, it was in need of work.

The builder who lived there agreed to sell to them and to tackle the project, which included finishing an incomplete extension.

“We lived in our old cottage while the work was ongoing and it took about a year to complete,” says Peter. “It was a complete revamp and we did some of the work ourselves, including staining the beams.”

One the the loveliest features is a stained glass window in the dining room, which was installed by the builder and Peter and Diane will miss this, the barn and the village when they downsize to a property in nearby Skipton.

“We have lived here since 2003 and we will miss the place but it’s time to downsize,” says Peter.

The barn, which dates to 1770, has had a number of different uses over the years. It was a candle makers, bakers, and for a while, a Catholic church before one was built on Bolton Road, Addingham.

There are Honeysuckle and Wisteria climbing up the rear elevation and a block paved driveway and ample parking.

Addingham village sits on the banks of the River Wharfe, surrounded by beautiful open countryside. It is very well served and has shops, including a small Co-op store for groceries, along with a post office, dental surgery, doctors' surgery and a community hall.
