It is easy to see why Pamela and Adrian Law fell for this home in Follifoot with a converted 18th century windmill at its heart. The setting is superb and the mill offers incredible long-range views over the surrounding countryside and beyond.

Pamela says: “It feels very rural but it is just outside Harrogate near Rudding Park, with Follifoot stables, Pannal Golf Club and Pannal railway station close by.

“We loved the location because it is so pretty and the windmill made the property unique. The views from the top are incredible. You can see York on a clear day. Our neighbours also have a mini lake so that attracts lots of birdlife to the area, including pheasants, woodpeckers and owls.”

The windmill, which now on the market with Knight Frank for £1.095m, was converted in the 1970s and a single storey extension was added. The Laws bought it in 1997 and have further extended the property, which now has five reception rooms, five bedrooms and four bathrooms. They also built a balcony around a bedroom in the windmill so furniture can be winched in through the window if necessary.

“We did that because the windmill has a winding staircase but, in fact, we have managed to get all our furniture up the stairs,” says Pamela, who experienced only one issue with having round walls, rather than square. Pictures wouldn’t sit flush but she solved that problem by putting champagne corks at the back of them.

The Laws are now selling to downsize and are sad to say goodbye to their much-loved home. “It’s so peaceful and quiet here,” says Pamela. “It has been a fantastic place to live.”

On the other side of the mill is a snug, formal drawing room and ground floor guest room with en-suite. The windmill has a circular bedroom with a balcony, a bathroom, third bedroom and main bedroom with en-suite and balcony plus a fifth bedroom on the top floor.

There is access onto the roof of the windmill offering the panoramic views Pamela mentioned. Outside, there are gardens, a driveway for numerous vehicles, a garage and an outbuilding/home office that could be converted into an annexe.
