After a long campaign, Jonathan Warner-Reed finally managed to persuade his wife Emma to view a striking country house that had captured his heart. His elation was short-lived when the estate agent revealed that Pinewood Manor, Healey, near Masham, had just been taken off the market.

“He told us to pop a note through the door expressing our interest in the property and when we arrived back home, the owners rang to say if they ever decided to put it back up for sale, they would call us first,” says Emma.

The house became a distant memory until two years later when that phone call came and resulted in a match made in heaven. “When we went to view it, I still insisted I wasn’t interested but then I walked into the kitchen and said ‘when are we moving in?’” says Emma.

That was just over 10 years ago and the Warner-Reeds have no regrets about their decision to buy the idyllic Edwardian home, which is described as “a privately owned island in the middle of the Swinton estate”, four miles from Masham.

“The water board bought the land from the estate so they could create a reservoir. They built this house for their surveyors but the reservoir was never constructed,” says Emma.

Since buying the property, the Warner-Reeds have carried out a comprehensive but sensitive modernisation of the main house, its indoor pool and its detached cottage. The couple and their children are now moving but will miss their country home, which is on the market for £1.45m with Jackson-Stops.

“It is such a beautiful place with no traffic noise. You are surrounded by countryside and wildlife and yet you don’t feel remote because Masham is nearby,” says Emma, who adds: “We are selling because I grew up by the coast and have a need to be by the sea. Now Jonathan can work from home we can make that move.”
