Removing all the brochures from his shop windows after lockdown appeared to be an act of marketing madness but estate agent David Metcalfe sacrificed the promotional opportunity for good reason. The windows of Hunters Yeadon and Hunters Ripon now celebrate the work of the NHS and other key workers while urging everyone else to stay at home.

Their shop fronts are decorated with brightly-coloured pictures and slogans of praise for those who are caring for the sick and for others who are keeping the country’s vital services going.

Hunters’ branches in Otley and Horsforth have followed David’s lead in cheering those who are risking their lives to save others.

David’s motivation for sacrificing one of his main marketing tools is personal. He says: “I have a very good reason to be grateful to the NHS. They saved my daughter’s life. She had to be resuscitated when she was a baby and was in intensive care Leeds General Infirmary.

“The care she received was amazing and, apart from hearing problems, she is well and happy.

“Our branches are closed to the public and, although I am still able to take calls and work from home, there is very little we can do at this time.

“Dedicating our windows to celebrating the NHS and key workers seemed a better way to use them at this time.”

He is also running a campaign to recognise NHS staff and key workers via the Facebook page for his Ripon branch, which is @HuntersRipon. People are being asked to nominate those they feel should be rewarded for their efforts. The best two will win a hamper donated by Weetons of Harrogate.

“There are some truly humbling nominations,” says David.
